Material Services Barge
July 29, 1936
Built in 1929 with a unique design that allowed it to be able to pass under bridges without having them raised, the Material Services Barge saw seven years of faithful and diligent service on the Great Lakes before sinking in 1936 near the South Chicago Lighthouse in a squall while hauling sand. Sadly between 15 and 22 lives were lost in the event. Today she sits upright in about 30 feet of water and is the perfect wreck for new divers and those just wanting an easy wreck to explore. We visit the Material Services Barge from Hammond Marina.
